Mya would define science fiction as a genre that takes the idea of scientific discoveries and changes it to fit the idea that an author needs to create a story. She believes that science fiction is not limited to the definition above, if that was true things like Star Wars and Star Trek would not exist. There is no scientific proof that there are aliens but those two series take the idea of beings not from Earth and of space ships that travel at fast speeds and unimaginable distances. Mya also believes that science fiction takes ideas of things that the author might desire or fear. For example, the author might desire to go back in time and cleanse their past of mistakes or they are afraid of what might happen if they went back in time. Mya thinks that some authors of science fiction take what we know of science and improve/alter it to beyond modern human capabilities.
Mya would say that science fiction is important to her because she loves to escape from reality and dive in to things that could not possibly exist. She loves it when authors express their strange and interesting ideas in their chosen media. Mya does not only read/watch science fiction, she will read/watch any form of fiction for pleasure and will read/watch non-fiction for information. She finds science fiction to be one of the more important genres to read because it throws together her a few of the subjects that she finds interesting: time travel, extraterrestrials, and traveling through space.
Mya wishes to learn more of the behind the scenes of the science fiction genre, she wants to learn the what types of categories science fiction has to offer. She has a limited amount of knowledge of what science fiction is and what is considered science fiction, she thirsts to know what science fiction actually is and not what she thinks it might be. She hopes that she will not only gain knowledge of science fiction from this class, but to have more experience with writing in general. Mya believes that science fiction will help her put some of the ideas bouncing around in her head onto paper, which she thinks will help her with organizing her thoughts, something she has trouble doing. She thinks that this organization will help her not only keep her mind in order but her life which is very important to her.
Mya loves science fiction that focuses on time travel and alternate realities. She loves both of these topics because they seem so unrealistic, she loves things that she believes to be impossible. Mya would be ecstatic to escape to a world of fantasy, to live in a world that is not her own, she finds this world cruel, dangerous, and somewhat boring. Even though some of the science fiction worlds are probably more dangerous than her own, Mya wants to experience them as her own. Mya is incapable of doing this, even if she wishes she could, she has to stick with her temporary disappearances of reality by reading books or watching videos.
Some questions Mya wants answered in her study of science fiction are: What classifies a piece as science fiction?, What are the categories that are involved in science fiction and how many are there?,
